Controversy Arises Over Aslan Casting in New Narnia Adaptation

46 minutes ago 0

The decision to cast actress Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan, the lion character viewed as a Christ figure in Netflix’s new adaptation of “Narnia,” has attracted criticism. Various Christian and media figures have raised concerns, and an online petition seeks to replace director Greta Gerwig for future films. This petition emerged on Change.org following negative reactions to the theological implications of having a woman voice a character who symbolizes Jesus Christ.

“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” directed by Gerwig, adapts the 1955 novel by C.S. Lewis. The film is slated for theatrical release on February 12, 2027, and will stream on Netflix on April 2, 2027. The announcement of Streep’s casting has renewed concerns among Christians about altering Aslan’s portrayal.

Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of Movieguide and former president of the Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation, expressed confusion about this choice. He highlighted the widespread recognition of Aslan as a Christ figure and suggested that this change might alienate many Christian viewers.

Baehr, who briefly discussed the film with Gerwig, acknowledged her different perspective but warned that the choice could deter some of the 110 to 140 million Christian fans from watching.

Gerwig, self-described as a Unitarian Universalist, envisions the adaptation as a “rock opera.” She told Empire she wanted someone profound yet not pretentious to voice Aslan, choosing Streep for her ability to convey depth and joy.

In casting, Ned Lott, who worked on the 2005 “Narnia” film, emphasized the importance of matching the voice and character integrity. He shared his own experience casting Aslan, describing how he unexpectedly found the perfect voice in Liam Neeson for the 2005 adaptation.

Lott noted that while unconventional casting can work, it is generally for comedic roles. Streep’s selection for Aslan remains puzzling to Lott, who emphasized the care taken with the character in past films.
