A town hall in Dearborn, Michigan, turned contentious as Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church accused the town of operating under Sharia law. “America, we have lost this city. This city is no longer under American laws,” Sewell declared during the event.
Amid a backdrop of anti-Islam protests in Dearborn, Sewell’s remarks reflect fears that some communities in Michigan aim to align more closely with Islamic principles. He voiced concerns that these views conflict with broader American values.
Rather than referring to explicit laws, Sewell’s references to Sharia law highlight what he perceives as favoritism towards Muslims under the guise of religious freedom. He cited a local case where, according to him, Muslim counterprotesters faced insufficient repercussions for attacking Jake Lang, a political activist.
Lang, known for clashes with Dearborn’s Muslim community, presents himself as a defender of American culture. Online, his rhetoric is incendiary. He has called for drastic actions against those he sees as threats to America, linking this to broader immigration issues.
This tension escalated at the city’s Arbaeen March, where Lang’s protest led to a confrontation. Video footage captured Lang being attacked while holding a provocative sign. Police arrested one assailant, with investigations ongoing to identify others involved.
Despite one arrest, Sewell, Lang, and other activists believe more should be done to address Muslim influence. They plan demonstrations to urge Dearborn officials to reassess the situation.
Dearborn’s Mayor, Abdullah Hammoud, refuted claims of Muslim favoritism. During the city council meeting, he stated that portraying Dearborn as dominated by Muslims ignores the contributions of other communities. “They are attacking the idea that all of us can belong to America,” Hammoud emphasized.
The 2020 census revealed that a majority of Dearborn’s population is of Middle Eastern or North African descent, marking it as the first U.S. city with a predominantly Arab population at 54.5%.
