Controversy Surrounds AOC and Mamdani’s Actions at 9/11 Memorial

3 weeks ago 0

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism for their actions during the recent 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan. During the solemn reading of victims’ names from the September 11, 2001 attacks, they appeared to share a moment of levity.

A television feed captured the mayor and congresswoman grinning while talking, which sparked online criticism. Former Sen. Ted Cruz’s staffer, Steve Guest, labeled their behavior as ‘disgraceful,’ and Meghan McCain echoed the sentiment by questioning why they were laughing.

‘They always show us who they really are,’ commented a critic on social media platform X.

Despite some backlash, Michael Ragusa, reportedly head of former Mayor Giuliani’s security, defended the politicians, stating the video was misleading. According to him, the footage showed a greeting and he observed other politicians joking in the vicinity.

The Pittsburgh Republican Committee attributed the spectacle as a reason why 9/11 victims’ families had opposed Mamdani’s presence. Meanwhile, Spencer Pratt, a former Los Angeles mayoral candidate, criticized their actions, claiming that they enjoyed the nation’s misery.

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov expressed her dismay at Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez’s behavior, emphasizing the emotional impact on grieving families.

Despite images of Mamdani standing solemnly alongside News Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and New York’s first gentleman William Hochul Jr., the criticism persisted with many citing the ‘jarring split-screen’ effect.

Other political figures, like Rep. Randy Fine and Rep. Wesley Hunt, condemned the actions, emphasizing the significance of Ground Zero and the inappropriate nature of politics at such a sensitive event.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, but at the time of writing, a statement had not been received.
