The United States men’s national team striker, Folarin Balogun, faced unexpected circumstances during the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. The USMNT suffered a 4-1 defeat against Belgium in the Round of 16 on July 6, a match Balogun hadn’t expected to play.
On July 1, Balogun was involved in a controversial incident with Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemovic. After a VAR review, Balogun received a contentious red card, leading to an automatic one-game suspension. In a surprising turn, FIFA decided to suspend the red card, allowing Balogun to participate in the match against Belgium. This decision sparked discussions about corruption and ethics.
Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia, commented, “I didn’t know that at the World Cup the 5th of July is actually the first of April. It’s April Fools.”
Despite the situation, Garcia expressed his admiration for Balogun after the game. Garcia said, “Balogun came to talk to me. I liked that. It’s not his fault. He’s not the one to blame. I appreciate he came to talk to me, and he’s a player I really like.” He acknowledged Balogun’s talent but noted that Belgium’s defense, led by center-backs Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy, effectively contained Balogun’s efforts during the match.
While Balogun was a significant topic of discussion, he had little impact in the game against Belgium. The Red Devils dominated the match, as reflected in the scoreline, with the USMNT managing only two shots on goal. Malik Tillman scored a free-kick goal in the 31st minute.
Balogun concluded his debut World Cup as the top scorer for the USMNT, having scored three goals. The U.S. men’s team has consistently exited the World Cup in the Round of 16 in the past four tournaments they attended, missing qualification in 2018 and not reaching the quarterfinals since 2002. Belgium had previously defeated the USMNT in the 2014 World Cup’s Round of 16.
Belgium will face Spain in the quarterfinals at SoFi Stadium on Friday, July 10.
