Cornerstone University’s Anti-Communism Event: A Closer Look

1 week ago 0

Cornerstone University, a Christian institution in Michigan, is organizing an event focused on opposing communism. The event will feature speakers who have lived under oppressive regimes, offering insights into the impacts of communism and socialism.

University’s Concerns

Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, Cornerstone University’s president, explained that the theme was selected months ago due to shifting public opinions about communism and socialism in the U.S. The event, titled ‘Why Not Communism? A Wisdom Conversation on Freedom, Faith, and the Future of America,’ is scheduled for October 1.

‘The history of communism and socialism is troubling,’ Moreno-Riaño stated, expressing concern over its moral implications. He emphasized the university’s commitment to educating students and the community about these ideologies’ negative impacts.

Featuring Eyewitness Accounts

Several notable speakers will participate in the event. Among them is Yeonmi Park, a North Korean defector, who will share her experience of escaping oppressive control.

“If America falls, the world could be doomed,” Park warned.

Park recounted living in a socialist regime in North Korea before escaping to China at age 13. She and her mother faced severe challenges, including human trafficking and political persecution.

Park’s Perspective

Park criticized the idealistic portrayal of communism among students in the U.S., contrasting it with her first-hand experiences of suffering. She highlighted the widespread lack of awareness about global authoritarian regimes.

According to the Varieties of Democracy Institute, 74% of the world’s population lives under autocracies. Park urged American students to recognize the privilege of freedom and the potential consequences of losing it.

Christian Values and Liberty

Moreno-Riaño linked freedom closely to Cornerstone’s Christian identity, citing it as essential to the gospel and human flourishing.

‘Liberty and freedom are core to our faith,’ he explained, underscoring the importance of encouraging community engagement.

Moreno-Riaño hopes the event will inspire students and attendees to take an active role as informed citizens, grounded in faith and liberty.
