35 minutes ago 0

Mary Brown, a long-standing member of Gary Common Council, has left behind a legacy of dedication and service to her community. Serving the citizens of Gary for over two decades, Brown’s passing on Monday was announced by Council President Linda Barnes Caldwell, marking a significant loss for the council and the entire city.

Caldwell highlighted Brown’s commitment to public service and her contributions as council’s third district representative since November 1999. She was celebrated for her advocacy to uplift the Steel City using her extensive knowledge of finance. Her work strongly impacted community projects like the new Tolleston Opportunity Campus, a major $45 million facility inaugurated on September 28, housing critical community services.

A graduate of Emerson High School, Brown maintained robust ties with Gary through various roles, including serving as a cost analyst at U.S. Steel and as customer service manager at the Gary Sanitary District. Notably, she resigned from her position at the sanitary district in June 2018 after legal regulations restricted holding both a city position and elected office.

Brown’s achievements were widely recognized by fellow council members, with Councilman Dwight Williams affirming her passion for the city, and Councilwoman Lori Latham commending her devotion to quality of life projects and community parks.

Throughout her career, Brown’s advocacy included efforts to bring the RailCats’ U.S. Steel Yard stadium to Gary, demonstrating leadership even when facing opposition due to escalating costs. Her extensive experience influenced city projects, assuring informed financial decisions to benefit Gary.

Notable tributes came from various officials. Mayor Eddie Melton acknowledged Brown’s indelible impact and unwavering public service, while State Sen. Mark Spencer reminisced about Brown’s steady presence and community engagement. Lake County Councilman Ron Brewer and State Rep. Ragen Hatcher emphasized her influential leadership role and the strong connections she fostered in Gary.

The community remembers Mary Brown not only as a spirited advocate but a servant leader whose legacy will echo through the corridors of Gary’s development for generations.
