MIAMI — Oscar Alvarez finds himself in a unique position. While he actively promotes democratic socialism in Miami, there’s one place he avoids discussing it: his family’s kitchen. Despite his dedication to the cause, engaging his family’s views remains challenging.

Among Miami’s communities, Alvarez works tirelessly to share his ideals. During a meeting with residents of the Silver Court mobile home park, located in Miami, he navigates discussions on democratic socialism, aiming to engage people in conversation.

At home, however, things are different. On a typical day, Alvarez’s mother relaxes in the kitchen, while his brother unwinds after a day at the beach. In these familiar surroundings, Alvarez remains silent about his advocacy. He simply gathers his things quietly, placing socialist zines into his tote bag.
