The Chicago White Sox had no intention of letting Cubs star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong lead them to defeat for a second consecutive night. When Crow-Armstrong was intentionally walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth, it drew boos from Cubs fans present among the crowd of 40,034. This decision paved the way for Alex Bregman to emerge as the hero for the Cubs.
Bregman had tied the game in the seventh inning with an RBI single. He capitalized again by attacking a first-pitch fastball from Sox reliever Trevor Richards, driving in Carson Kelly, who started the ninth with a double, for a 4-3 walk-off win. Bregman entered Tuesday’s game with impressive statistics, hitting a .357 average, alongside nine doubles, six home runs, 17 RBIs, and a 1.104 OPS across his last 21 games. He led MLB in hits and extra-base hits during that span.
You love it. Sometimes you’re going to fail, but you want them every single time. Eventually, you come through,” Bregman stated. “Carson did the hard part by getting into scoring position to start the inning.
A rain delay of 1 hour and 28 minutes halted play in the middle of the eighth. The Cubs, with a record of 74-53, secured their league-topping 13th walk-off win, tying their 2015 team for the most in a season over the last 90 years. Despite starter Kevin Gausman’s premature exit in the fifth inning due to cramping in his left thumb and hand, the Cubs found a way to prevail.
That’s a lot,” Gausman noted regarding the walk-off wins. “It shows how special this team is. They always believe in each other.
The Cubs began strong against the White Sox’s lefty opener Bryan Hudson. They came into the game with the best offense against left-handed pitchers in MLB. Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch quickly demonstrated this by hitting solo home runs off Hudson.
Sox pitcher Erick Fedde, however, put up a solid performance, allowing no runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five, and walking two. He managed to hold the Cubs to three hits.
We had a good game plan. Threw inside well and opened up other options,” Fedde explained.
Sox reliever Huascar Brazobán managed to escape Fedde’s traffic in the sixth. However, in the seventh, he struggled after walking two consecutive batters. Manager Will Venable brought Grant Taylor to handle the top of the Cubs’ lineup. Taylor effectively struck out Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki, although Bregman managed to tie the game with a crucial two-out, two-strike RBI single.
Gausman, dealing with a hand issue, managed to produce a few promising results with his fastball and splitter. Still, he failed to prevent the Sox from scoring in the second inning with Drew Romo’s RBI single. The Sox tied the game through Murakami’s 406-foot home run in the third. In the fourth, Tristan Peters’ RBI double against Gausman gave the Sox another edge.
We battled hard but I wasn’t as sharp as I wanted,” Gausman admitted.
Gausman experienced a cramp during the fourth. It caused his left thumb to lock in an awkward position, requiring attention from the team trainer, Nick Frangella, and manager Counsell. Although he attempted to continue, the cramp persisted, leading to his removal in the fifth.
Gausman, leaving after 86 pitches, praised Javier Assad for stepping up in relief. Assad delivered three shutout innings, allowing just two hits without walks and striking out two. This performance added to Assad’s strong record since May 1, boasting a 2.24 ERA over 64 1/3 innings, spanning various roles.
Javy put the game back in order for us,” Counsell remarked.
