Highly effective pitching by Kevin Gausman led the Chicago Cubs to a dominating win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Monday night, Gausman relied mainly on his four-seam fastball, a shift from his typical strategy that includes more splitters. This change proved challenging for the Diamondbacks, with Gausman throwing 66% of his pitches as fastballs and achieving a career-high 24 called strikes.
Thanks to his fastball dominance, Gausman threw seven shutout innings, resulting in a 7-0 victory. This game marked only the fourth occasion this year where a Cubs starter pitched seven or more innings without conceding a run. Despite the impressive performance, Gausman remained tight-lipped about when the team realized Arizona’s tendencies. The key, as Gausman noted, was early recognition of the Diamondbacks’ anticipation of his splitter.
“We blew some fastballs with two strikes kind of by guys today,” Gausman remarked. He praised catcher Carson Kelly for his exceptional game-calling, which helped land critical strikes when needed.
Gausman’s masterful command was evident, with 13 of his 15 first-pitch fastballs hitting the strike zone and only two resulting in hits. His performance in accumulating called strikes with a four-seam fastball ranks high in the Statcast era, second only to Drew Hutchinson. Gausman attributes this precision to diligent bullpen sessions.
The Cubs have high hopes for Gausman following his acquisition at the trade deadline. Alongside Clay Holmes, who has been impressive in recent starts, the Cubs aim to strengthen their rotation amid the playoff push. Gausman’s consistency and professionalism, as noted by Kelly, serve as an inspiration for the team.
Last year, Gausman showcased his capabilities during the Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series journey, despite a challenging outing against the Cubs on June 19. However, his recent performance demonstrates his readiness for October’s intensity.
The Cubs’ lineup exhibited depth, overcoming a quiet night from their top hitters. Rookie Pedro Ramírez provided an early lead with an RBI triple. Later, Seiya Suzuki’s double, followed by back-to-back homers from Michael Conforto and Carson Kelly, padded the Cubs’ lead. Contributions continued as Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner added to the score, capitalizing on the Diamondbacks’ mistakes.
The Cubs, boasting a 76-56 record, recognize the importance of team-wide participation. Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the influence of Conforto, whose adaptability and dedication have resonated throughout the roster. Conforto’s perspective, prioritizing team success over personal accolades, is a driving force for the team’s unity.
“I felt more like I’ve come in here and kind of joined the party,” Conforto expressed after his three-hit performance.
The Cubs’ belief in their championship potential is evident. Conforto’s description of the team’s mindset highlights the Cubs’ readiness for postseason challenges.
