Dallas Cowboys Add Mike Pettine to Coaching Staff to Address Defensive Challenges

43 minutes ago 0

The Dallas Cowboys have faced persistent defensive difficulties since the 2025 campaign. A recent upset home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ‘Thursday Night Football’ has led to an important change in their coaching staff. The team has hired long-time NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. Pettine will collaborate with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has experienced challenges in his first year in that role.

It’s something we’ve been talking about for a long time. I think as we looked at everything, we had a chance to convince Pett that it made sense for him, said head coach Brian Schottenheimer about Pettine’s hiring.

Pettine’s addition comes as a response to the Cowboys’ recent struggles. Despite early setbacks, Parker has displayed solid communication and schemes, prompting Parker to initiate discussions with Pettine about joining the Cowboys when he was hired.

Parker began his NFL journey as a quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2019. Pettine was the defensive coordinator of the team at that time. Schottenheimer also shares a history with Pettine, having worked together on Rex Ryan’s New York Jets staff.

Pettine had initially retired before the 2026 season but returned to the field after the Cowboys’ recent defeat to the Buccaneers, marking Tampa Bay’s first win. His tenure with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant head coach under Kevin O’Connell lasted until the previous season, while he also served with the Chicago Bears as a senior defensive assistant during the 2021 season.

Currently, the Cowboys do not intend for Pettine to replace Parker as the defensive coordinator. Instead, both are expected to collaborate in improving the team’s on-field performance. After the Cowboys’ loss, which dropped their season record to 2-3, the team has allowed the second-most yards in the NFL, averaging 395.4 yards per game. The Cowboys’ run defense is also struggling, conceding 168.4 yards per game.

Despite these defensive challenges, the Cowboys’ offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott, remains robust, ranking seventh in the NFL for points per game at 27.6.

Jerry Jones and others invested in the team’s success desire tangible improvements on the field. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of trust and relationship between the coordinator and the head coach, asserting, If they don’t have any relationship, then how are they going to ever get anything done? That doesn’t help anybody.

The Cowboys will face Pettine and Parker’s former Packers team in a primetime matchup on ‘Sunday Night Football’ in Week 6.
