Dallas Cowboys Revamp Defense, Impact on Sam Williams

1 month ago 0

The Dallas Cowboys focused on strengthening their defense during the offseason, especially in the pass-rusher position. The team made notable moves by trading for Pro Bowler Rashan Gary and signing former All-Pro Von Miller. Additionally, they drafted Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham. These changes might lead to some existing defensive ends becoming expendable.

Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report suggested that Sam Williams could be facing job uncertainty. Davenport believes Williams might be a candidate to be cut when the Cowboys trim their roster. “Sam Williams once seemed like an emerging talent for the Cowboys,” Davenport noted. “However, he might need to reboot his career with another team. With Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, rookie Malachi Lawrence, and Von Miller potentially securing spots, there may only be limited opportunities for Williams, Marist Liufau, and James Houston.” Liufau is a key special teams player, meaning Williams could find himself without a place on the team.

Throughout his three seasons with the Cowboys, Williams accumulated 85 tackles, 9.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles. At 27, he missed all of the 2024 season due to an ACL injury suffered in the preseason. Last year, despite playing all 17 games, Williams only recorded one sack.

With the Cowboys adding new talent, Williams understands his position might be at risk. Nonetheless, he embraces the challenge. “I’ve absorbed all the reports and negative comments, reflecting on them to improve,” Williams stated. “I look in the mirror to understand my mistakes and make necessary changes. I write notes on the mirror in my room as reminders. Ultimately, it’s about acknowledging the negatives, self-reflecting, and committing to hard work. I keep my head down and let my efforts speak.”
