As college football grapples with changes like NIL and NFL players returning to college, high school football remains largely untouched by such influences. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently shared his thoughts on what makes high school football unique.
Addressing young players, Campbell emphasized the importance of camaraderie. “You guys grew up together,” he stated, highlighting the significance of shared experiences and unforgettable senior years. “Wherever you’re at, make the most of it because you’re not guaranteed to play and be with those guys you grew up with. Enjoy the game at that level,” Campbell advised.
Campbell’s remarks came ahead of the start of the high school football season, which he called the last level of “no-nonsense” football. He reminisced about the familiar scent of freshly cut grass and the thrill of nighttime games. “The wins, the sacrifice, the hard work, and the sweat and tears make it a special time. Enjoy it,” he urged.
He encouraged young team members to support their seniors by giving their all on the field. “You owe it to the seniors,” Campbell said. He noted that for many seniors, this season is their final opportunity to play at this level. “Make it a special year for them,” he implored young players, reminding them that they would soon rely on younger players to do the same for them.
Dan Campbell’s message underscored the lasting memories and experiences that high school football provides, as he urged players to cherish the moments.
