An endorsement from President Donald Trump proved decisive in Darline Graham’s victory in the South Carolina runoff election. Graham, representing South Carolina, overcame Representative Ralph Norman in a race to serve as the GOP nominee for the Senate, following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

Senator Lindsey Graham passed away in July at 71. His sister, Darline Graham, was appointed to complete his term. Despite her limited political experience, Graham received Trump’s endorsement, helping her secure the nomination.

“Darline is somebody I’ve known for a long time,” Trump stated during a rally in Myrtle Beach. “I asked her to do this. I said, ‘Darline, you got to do it,’ because everyone loves her. Everyone respects her.”

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham temporarily, but Trump encouraged her to pursue the race beyond the remaining months of her brother’s term.

During the debate, Graham acknowledged her lack of knowledge on national security issues, such as Taiwan’s strategic importance. Yet, she positioned herself as a politician focused on domestic issues, contrasting with her brother’s approach.

Trump’s substantial campaign funding, nearly $400 million, was leveraged to support Graham’s campaign. Over $800,000 funded a phone campaign backing Graham over the weekend, according to financial records.

Graham emphasized her alignment with Trump’s agenda, criticizing Norman for opposing Republican leadership, including Trump. She stated, “We already have enough problem Democrats, we don’t need a problem Republican.”

Despite her brief time in the Senate, Graham claimed significant achievements. She highlighted the passage of the bipartisan Russia sanctions package and her role in confirming Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Simply put, I’ve done more in 20 days than Ralph Norman has done in 20 years,” Graham asserted.
