Democratic Activist Criticizes Hasan Piker over Past Comments

Shannon Watts, a Democratic political activist focused on gun control, voiced criticism of Hasan Piker, a progressive influencer, on Friday. Piker responded by acknowledging the pattern while attacking Watts, accusing her of GOP-like behavior and using MAGA-style tactics. Democratic activist Fred Guttenberg also criticized Piker, condemning his attacks on Watts and likening them to NRA and AIPAC comparisons.

Watts’ conflict with Piker highlights growing concerns among Democrats over resurfacing comments by some party members. Similar issues have arisen with figures like Graham Platner and Abdul El-Sayed, who were scrutinized for past remarks and actions.

Watts criticized the Democratic Party for ignoring such online histories, suggesting it might harm their electability and credibility. Piker, although not a candidate, faces scrutiny for remarks he made while supporting progressive candidates like El-Sayed.

Piker was notably criticized for saying “America deserved 9/11” in 2019, a statement he later retracted as inappropriate. This and other remarks have led to backlash, including the University of Washington canceling an event with him due to his rhetoric on Israel.

Piker argued that Democrats should uphold First Amendment rights, linking his defense of free speech against the backdrop of Trumpism. He has also faced criticism for inconsistent positions, such as previously calling for the arrest of political figures like Adam Schiff.
