Denny Hamlin Challenges Sonar Use in Bass Fishing

2 weeks ago 0

Denny Hamlin, known for his NASCAR achievements, has voiced concerns about the use of forward-facing sonar in professional bass fishing. After purchasing a boat, Hamlin dived into the sport and is now speaking out about how this technology impacts traditional fishing skills.

Hamlin expressed his views to OutKick OutDoors, saying, “It’s a little too much.” He reminisces about the lost art of finding fish naturally, without technology. The sonar helps pros catch large quantities of fish, improving TV viewership. Yet, Hamlin sees it pushing boundaries.

The debate over sonar tech is significant in bass fishing. The Bassmaster Elite Series allows sonar at only five of nine events. Coin flips decide which events permit this technology, blending traditional and tech-focused tournaments.

Major League Fishing manages differently. Competitors can use it only in one 2.5-hour period per competition day, and limits are placed on devices.

Hamlin sees benefits for novices but understands the need for limits. Learning from professional angler Chris Zaldain, Hamlin gained insights. “Watching him cast allows me to learn,” he said, acknowledging how the sonar aids newcomers.

Hamlin is branching out beyond freshwater. Now he’s purchasing an offshore boat, eyeing new fishing challenges.

Fishing offers Hamlin therapeutic value and patience in a competitive lifestyle. While less intense than racing, his competitive nature surfaces fishing alone. Hamlin prefers solitude, handling his line uninterrupted.

Though still drawn to the thrill, competitive angling remains a potential next step. For now, fishing provides him escape from daily pressures.
