Derek Carr Becomes Special Advisor to UCLA Football

Former quarterback Derek Carr has accepted a new role that surprised many football enthusiasts. After retiring from the NFL following the 2024 season, Carr seemed content to stay away from the field. Despite rumors that he might return to play for teams in need of a quarterback, he remained retired until recently.

New Role at UCLA

The UCLA football team announced on Monday that Carr has been appointed as a special advisor to Bob Chesney, the newly hired head coach. Carr, known for his achievements as a four-time Pro Bowler and NCAA leader in passing and touchdowns, expressed his enthusiasm for the new role.

“I’ve known Darrick Yray, UCLA’s general manager, for a long time and greatly respect his career accomplishments,” Carr stated in a press release. “The chance to assist Coach Chesney, the staff, and UCLA’s quarterbacks excites me. I look forward to sharing my experiences and supporting the program in every possible way.”

According to UCLA, Carr will provide valuable game-planning strategy and work directly with the quarterbacks to refine their skills.

Impressive Career Stats

Carr’s NFL career spanned 11 years, during which he amassed a total of 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 92.8. His college career was equally remarkable.

At Fresno State, Carr played for four seasons, starting in three, and accumulated 12,843 passing yards, 113 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. His final two seasons with the Bulldogs ended with a 20-6 record, highlighted by a spectacular final year where he threw for 5,083 yards, 50 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Carr was twice named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and earned the prestigious 2013 Sammy Baugh Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top passer.
