Des Bishop’s path in the comedy world is unique. Growing up in New York City, his journey took him across the globe before bringing him back to the U.S. His latest project, a comedy special titled Bridge and Tunnel, showcases how his experiences shaped his comedic style.
Journey Across Continents
Bishop moved from Queens to Ireland at 14, staying there until his mid-40s during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout his career, he performed in various languages and media. His experiences in Ireland honed his storytelling, while tours in the U.S. demanded a pace and punch to his delivery that improved his craft significantly. Performing in different venues across America taught him to balance storytelling with comedic timing, which strengthened his material.
“Gigging in America, touring around the United States, just made me a way better comedian,” Bishop said.
Global Influence
Bishop’s comedic prowess is not limited to the U.S. and Ireland. He learned Mandarin to perform in front of a Chinese audience, as documented in Des Bishop: Breaking China. Despite differences in cultural humor styles, his energetic approach resonated with the audience. This international perspective enriched his act back in the U.S. and allowed him to tap into new material.
Embracing American Roots
Bishop’s act takes a nostalgic turn, paying homage to his American roots, notably his upbringing in Queens. This ‘working-class guy from Queens’ identity has become a rich source of material. The special leans into Gen X nostalgia, appealing to those who share similar experiences and cultural references.
“Once I embraced that, my comedy just exploded. It helped me find a bucketload of new material,” Bishop explained.
While acknowledging that nostalgia-driven comedy might not appeal to younger audiences, Bishop finds value in appealing to those who relate to his experiences.
A Comedy Partnership
Bishop’s success is complemented by his wife, Hannah Berner, an accomplished comedian herself. Berner, known for her comedy specials and popular podcasts, aids Bishop’s reach across different audiences. The couple respects each other’s professional spaces, which fosters collaboration. Berner’s insight into social media trends has particularly benefited Bishop’s online presence, turning potentially overlooked content into viral successes.
Bishop’s reflection on his career highlights a theme of learning to let go. “Entertainment careers are long,” he shared. The ability to move past setbacks has been pivotal in his and Berner’s journeys.
