The Cleveland Browns surprised many by defeating the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. This came as fans who previously booed quarterback Deshaun Watson began to cheer him on.
Prior to the game, Watson faced criticism from his own crowd at Huntington Bank Field. However, during the game, chants of “Let’s go Watson” filled the air.
In the second half, the only boos heard occurred when Carolina’s Princely Umanmielen sacked Watson. Replays revealed Umanmielen grabbing and twisting Watson’s facemask, but officials did not call a penalty.
Watson’s performance ignited a dramatic change in fan sentiment. Unlike past experiences, Watson was greeted with approval. “I was hearing the crowd, the yelling, the positivity,” Watson said. “I didn’t hear any of the boos. I was just trying to give them something to cheer about.”
During the 21-18 win, Watson achieved two passing touchdowns. This resonated with fans who had previously criticized him.
Speculation existed that fan frustration stemmed from Watson’s contract and past performances. Additionally, his 2022 NFL suspension related to alleged misconduct added strain. Despite these factors, Watson appeared to regain favor after leading the team to a fourth-quarter comeback.
Reflecting on the game, Watson expressed his excitement about playing again at home. “From the moment I woke up, the anticipation, the anxiousness … just to get in front of the fans,” he noted. “The energy, the fans—it was amazing.”
