Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson spoke on Monday, addressing recent comments about the team’s fans. He provided some explanation for his earlier remarks.
After being named the Browns’ starting quarterback, Watson realized criticizing the fans wasn’t wise, even if they booed him during Saturday’s preseason game.
“First off, I want to address the comments from Saturday after the game,” Watson began at his press conference. “Emotionally, I expected a different response after investing so much time in the team and community over the last two years.” These words set the tone for what followed.
Watson explained that his emotions had affected his comments and emphasized they were not meant to target all fans. He acknowledged many supporters had shown him great support. “I understand the frustration. The organization invested heavily in me, and things haven’t gone as planned due to injuries and downtime,” he stated.
Throughout the exchange, Watson didn’t quite apologize for suggesting fans had become “personal” and “disrespectful.” This sentiment followed his Saturday comment feeling more welcomed on the road than at home. “… maybe it’s 17 away games, then,” he had remarked.
Several factors contribute to the complex relationship between Watson and the Cleveland fans. Upon joining the team, he faced backlash due to legal issues involving allegations of sexual misconduct. The NFL suspended him for 11 games, along with a fine. A series of injuries further complicated his tenure. Over three seasons, he missed numerous games due to a shoulder injury and multiple Achilles tendon tears.
Such challenges from a quarterback who cost the Browns six draft picks, including three first-round picks, and a $230 million guaranteed contract, add to the fan base’s frustrations.
“Moving forward, I want to focus on football and delivering the best performance,” Watson stated. He emphasized his desire to thrive off the fans’ energy, aiming to contribute positively to the team and city. Watson expressed a commitment to putting Cleveland on the map through wins and celebrating success.
