Investigators released two notes on Friday that appear to be from those responsible for kidnapping Nancy Guthrie from her Tucson home in February. Federal and local authorities have been searching for Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, for nearly six months without success. Until now, only parts of the ransom notes, sourced from law enforcement, were shared by media outlets. The full release of these letters aims to generate leads in the high-profile case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared two ransom notes with Nancy Guthrie’s family. A news release from the department states, In some cases, people with knowledge do not initially come forward, possibly due to close relationships with those involved or concerns about their safety, reputation, or standing in the community.
It encourages those with information to come forward, stressing that even seemingly minor details could be significant.
The first note, directed to Savannah, was sent to a TV station shortly after Guthrie disappeared on February 1. It demanded $4 million in bitcoin by February 5. Failure to meet the deadline would increase the demand to $6 million by February 9, with a maximum seven-day holding period for Guthrie. The letter warns, If payment is not received by Monday, the 9th at 5 PM, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this, and her life is in your hands.
It also states there would be no further communication or negotiation.
The FBI’s Phoenix office considers some ransom notes potentially legitimate, while dismissing others as extortion attempts. The Phoenix office confirms the case remains a kidnapping for ransom investigation and notes receiving several ransom communications during the inquiry.
Investigators found the note released on Friday credible due to specific details, such as mentions of a white smartwatch on her bedroom floor and a broken floodlight in her backyard. A second note, also sent as a news tip, claims Guthrie likely died from her heart condition. Addressed to the Guthrie family, it reads, We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition, and she perished shortly after being taken. She is now buried in nature.
The note expresses regret, clarifying no harm was intended.
Guthrie was last seen on January 31, after being dropped off at home around 9:45 p.m. The FBI released images from her doorbell camera showing an armed, masked man outside her home the morning of her disappearance. This unidentified man is considered a suspect. In recent months, several detentions and searches have occurred as Savannah Guthrie and her family continued to appeal for their mother’s return.
