Detroit Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs Absent from Training Camp Amid Contract Talks

The Detroit Lions started their training camp on Wednesday without one of their key players. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was absent from the team’s initial practice session.

At 24, Gibbs is now eligible for a contract extension. Dan Campbell, the Lions coach, commented, “You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys.” This statement, reported by The Athletic, reflects the ongoing negotiations between the two sides. Campbell mentioned, “This is both sides working through something, and we’ll take it as it comes, but that’s where it is.” Gibbs has reported to the camp but is not on the Lions’ Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football Injury lists, suggesting a holdout for a new contract.

Drafted by the Lions as the No. 12 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs quickly became a pivotal part of the team. In his rookie season, he recorded 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, alongside 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown over 15 games.

Gibbs significantly improved in 2024, notching 1,412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns and catching 52 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, for the first time, he started in all 17 games. He amassed 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 77 receptions for 616 yards and five touchdowns.

Having made the Pro Bowl in all three of his NFL seasons, Gibbs stands as a crucial asset for the Lions. Additionally, the Atlanta Falcons’ Bijan Robinson was reported absent from their initial training camp session, with contract discussions believed to be the cause.
