Diego Munoz’s Rise as Bloom’s Captain
As a senior forward for Bloom’s varsity soccer team, Diego Munoz embraced his role as captain with determination. In his third season, Munoz focused on changing his mindset both towards his teammates and himself.
“I needed to fix my mentality because I always used to put my head down,” Munoz shared. “Now, if I put my head down, my teammates help me rise it up. I started believing in myself because everybody else believes in me so much.”
Performance Highlight
Munoz demonstrated his confidence by contributing a goal and two assists, leading the Blazing Trojans to a 6-2 victory over Marian Catholic in Chicago Heights. Erik Hernandez scored twice for Bloom (6-6-2) and teammates Nate Renteria, Sergio Pompa, and Angel Mendez each added a goal.
Marian Catholic’s Issac Mendoza and Alex Montalvo scored, while Edgar Bravo managed 14 saves for the Spartans (3-11-1). Munoz leveled the score at 1-1 in the 35th minute with a 20-yard strike, marking his eighth goal of the season.
We just had to get something going,” Munoz said. “I saw a chance to take the shot and was happy it went in.
He provided two assists as Bloom dominated the second half. Hernandez acknowledged his slow start but noted the importance of perseverance.
I think I was disappointing in the first half, but all that matters is that we kept it going and we believed in ourselves.
Leadership and Influence
Hernandez and the team look up to Munoz’s leadership, both on and off the field. “Diego brings special leadership to the team,” Hernandez said. “The captain’s armband is not for show. You should have great leadership and he shows exactly that.”
Munoz reflected on the motivation his role as captain provided, encouraging him to maintain positivity. “When I got the captain band, they told me I was going to have a lot of responsibility,” Munoz said. “I fixed it and I feel more complete as a player.”
Growth and Legacy
Bloom coach Zack Radtke noted Munoz’s growth in maturity and communication. Munoz joined Bloom’s varsity with the legacy of his older brother, Christian, who holds the program record for career goals.
Despite the challenge of comparison, Munoz made his mark. “Those are hard shoes to fill,” Radtke commented. “But he’s done a great job filling that spot and being a productive striker for us in a different way.”
Munoz learned to express his unique style, saying, “I realized over the years that I don’t need to be anybody else. I can just be myself and show my skills on the field.”
