Steve Witkoff’s approach during his meeting with Vladimir Putin has drawn attention. Acting as Donald Trump’s special envoy, Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, met with the Russian president in the Kremlin, offering remarks that some found disconcerting given the gravity of the ongoing war.
Witkoff’s words underscored the juxtaposition between entertaining anecdotes and the reality of a conflict that has caused significant human suffering and displacement. With hundreds of thousands impacted and Ukraine’s reconstruction needs towering at $588 billion, his comments highlighted the complexities of diplomatic negotiations.
“When we retire, we’ll have all these incredible stories and incredible memories, and yours will be right at the top of it all,” Witkoff expressed to Putin. Such a statement during times of strife presents a unique perspective on the ongoing diplomatic endeavors.
Despite continued Russian advances and technological advancements in drone warfare, these diplomatic efforts might play a role in shaping the future. Witkoff’s tact, although criticized, could prove essential as Kyiv navigates these turbulent times.
Every Little Helps
The diplomatic activity over the weekend yielded limited progress toward peace. Witkoff and Kushner’s brief stay in Moscow resulted not in a ceasefire but in a temporary halt on strikes in Kyiv. Russian forces refrained from attacking the city during this period, while Ukraine reciprocated by pausing actions against Moscow.
President Zelensky acknowledged the importance of this temporary peace during Witkoff and Kushner’s visit, humorously comparing their effectiveness to Patriot systems, which are usually relied upon to down missiles.
The struggle against advancing Russian technology remains significant. Ukrainian attempts to intercept the increased onslaught of drones have achieved some success. However, the rapid increase in drone deployment poses significant challenges, necessitating advancements in defense systems.
Zelensky disclosed the involvement of 67 Ukrainian companies in developing new systems to combat these threats. He emphasized that diplomacy, facilitated by American envoys, remains an integral part of the strategy to mitigate Russian aggression.
Flattery Only Gets You So Far
While Witkoff’s flattery might temporarily ease tensions, it appears unlikely to shift Russia’s firm stance. Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated unequivocally that Russia’s military goals remain firmly in sight. Any potential agreement must address what Russia deems the ‘root causes’ of conflict.
Putin’s requirements include Ukraine’s withdrawal from certain regions, acceptance of neutrality, and exclusion from NATO, among others. Ushakov did not suggest any alteration in Russia’s demands.
The format of negotiations poses challenges. The method of shuttle diplomacy might inadvertently reduce envoys to mere messengers rather than influential mediators. Kushner’s recent comments highlighted this limitation, advocating for direct trilateral talks as an alternative.
Witkoff’s diplomatic mission found itself navigating complex narratives, and the risk of losing control of negotiations looms large as trips between Moscow and Kyiv continue.
Baby Steps
Despite ongoing diplomatic activities, ending the conflict seems distant. Zelensky has prepared for the war to persist through winter unless significant battlefield changes occur.
Nevertheless, regular diplomatic visits that successfully pause hostilities offer a blueprint for more sustained efforts. Establishing precedents through temporary ceasefires can pave the way for more structured negotiations.
Although peace remains elusive, Witkoff’s approach—however criticized—is contributing to a gradual reduction in tensions, and its promise lies in bringing about small, incremental changes.
Ultimately, Ukrainians require the effectiveness of these efforts more than approval of the methods employed by American envoys.
