Novak Djokovic has solidified his reputation as one of tennis’s all-time greats. He surpassed Roger Federer with a historic victory at Wimbledon on Sunday. Djokovic triumphed over Roman Safiullin, winning 7-6 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, allowing him to move on to the quarterfinals. This marked Djokovic’s 106th Wimbledon win, eclipsing Federer’s record and placing Djokovic at the top of the all-time list.
Martina Navratilova holds the overall lead for both men and women with 120 wins. Djokovic still has a path to reaching that milestone. After the match, Djokovic expressed his feelings, stating, “Survive to thrive, that’s how I feel. So hopefully the thriving part is coming.” His win was hard-fought and extensive, lasting nearly three-and-a-half hours.
According to ESPN, this was Djokovic’s longest match at Wimbledon since the 2023 final he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz has posed challenges for Djokovic in the past, ousting him in the previous year’s final. Alcaraz is absent from this year’s Wimbledon due to a right wrist injury called tenosynovitis, which has sidelined him for an extended period.
However, Jannik Sinner, a strong competitor, remains in the tournament. He is currently a -175 favorite, competing against Shintaro Mochizuki. DraftKings Sportsbook places Djokovic as a +500 favorite to win Wimbledon. If successful, Djokovic would secure his eighth title, tying Federer’s record for most Wimbledon titles.
The match on Sunday raised questions about Djokovic’s stamina. Observers wonder if he exerted too much energy or if he’ll be ready for his upcoming match against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada. Auger-Aliassime, the No. 3 seed and No. 4 ATP player, will face Djokovic on Tuesday, July 7.
