Dodgers Acquire Tarik Skubal from Tigers in Major Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a significant move by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. Skubal, a two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, was traded during the Tigers’ 8-6 victory over the Athletics. The news stirred emotions for Skubal, who was drafted by the Tigers in 2018 and has grown into a star player with the team.

Reflecting on the trade, Skubal expressed excitement about joining the Dodgers. “I’m excited to be a Dodger,” he said. “Chasing three championships in a row is hard, and I’m thrilled to be part of that.” He described his feelings as a “roller coaster,” grappling with leaving behind the team where he built his career.

Joining a roster full of stars like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Mookie Betts, Skubal will strengthen a rotation that leads the majors with a 3.36 ERA among starting pitchers. The Dodgers, currently leading the NL West, aim to become the first team to win three consecutive World Series since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000. They opened the season with a $323.3 million payroll and will pay Skubal around $9.5 million for the rest of the season. The Tigers received three minor league prospects: right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, and outfielder Zyhir Hope.

Skubal, eligible for free agency after the World Series, holds a record $32 million salary in arbitration. His preference was to finish the season with the Tigers and compete for a title—a goal that has eluded Detroit since 1984. Skubal recalled the disappointment of falling short in past seasons, using it as motivation to win a World Series for Detroit.

The Tigers intended to contend this season by enhancing their rotation with Framber Valdez on a three-year, $115 million contract and retaining infielder Gleyber Torres with a $22 million deal. Despite a challenging start, they fought back into playoff contention with Skubal leading the charge. However, recent losses at home, including a memorable collapse in Skubal’s last start, diminished their playoff hopes.

In his final outing, Skubal reached a milestone with his 1,000th career strikeout amidst enthusiastic support from the crowd. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Skubal for his contributions and leadership. “He’s carried us a lot,” Hinch said. “I’ll forever be grateful for what he did for this organization.” Skubal’s impressive record with the Tigers stands at 61-42 with a 3.04 ERA over seven seasons. In postseason appearances, he holds a 2-1 record with a 2.04 ERA.

Skubal underwent a minimally invasive surgery in May to address a loose body in his pitching elbow, returning to pitch in mid-June. “The surgery went as expected,” he remarked. The Dodgers now anticipate Skubal’s contribution to their championship goals.
