On National Dog Day, the spotlight is on canine health and wellness, highlighting choices pet owners make for their animals. Sarah Goldberger, founder and CEO of Lord Jameson, a New York-based organic dog treat company, believes dogs should be part of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative. This initiative, introduced as a federal program in February 2025, emphasizes whole, nutrient-dense foods. It advocates for reducing refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and certain artificial additives.
Organic Ingredients for Dogs
Goldberger shared her commitment to using only natural ingredients, saying, “We have never used anything artificial. We’ve never used fake food coloring or flavoring. All of our bright, beautiful colors come from real fruits and vegetables.” Her vision for pet nutrition aligns with MAHA’s priorities. She hopes to inspire other pet brands to make better choices for the health and wellness of dogs. Goldberger started Lord Jameson in 2019, motivated by her late dog, Jameson, who suffered from a medical issue exacerbated by toxic medications.
Healthy Alternatives
Her dog treat recipes rely on clean, organic, gluten-free ingredients without preservatives, toxins, artificial colors, or flavors. Collaborating with a homeopathic vet, Goldberger taps into the power of plant-based medicine, incorporating herbs and botanicals for healing.
A survey of over 1,000 pet parents showed significant allergies among dogs to animal proteins, preservatives, and food colorings. Lord Jameson’s treats feature fruits, vegetables, herbs, and grains.
Unique Selling Points
Despite avoiding preservatives, the treats boast an impressive 18-month shelf life. Goldberger views this as a crucial selling point. She mentioned, “Lord Jameson has truly reimagined what dog treats can be and should be.” The treats have gained popularity for their impact on dogs’ digestive health, producing firmer stools due to whole food ingredients.
Goldberger mentioned that her treats are suitable for dogs with specific dietary needs, such as colitis or diabetes. The company has also introduced “protein-inspired” flavors within its Love Puffs line, using organic sorghum, a whole grain rich in protein and fiber.
Production and Distribution
Another key aspect of Lord Jameson’s operations is its vertical integration. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the company controls its manufacturing, kitchen, warehouse, and fulfillment center. “Everything is sourced primarily in North America,” Goldberger explained, noting stability in pricing over several years.
The company distributes its products across 5,500 independent pet retailers in the United States, grocery stores, and internationally in four countries. National Dog Day serves as an opportunity to promote healthier choices for pets, aligning with the broader goals of the MAHA initiative.
