Dolly Parton, known for hits about love, faith, and hard work, consistently avoided entering the realm of partisan politics. In a 2020 interview with USA Today, she stated, “I am not political, and I refuse to get caught up in political things.” Parton, who passed away at 80, held this position through various presidential elections and political offers.
Parton was clear about her desire to remain neutral, telling USA Today, “I have as many Republican fans as I do Democrats. I don’t want to offend anybody.” She emphasized responsibility, likening free speech to free will, acknowledging the consequences of what one says.
A 2018 interview with ABC’s David Wright saw Parton maintaining her non-partisan stance. When asked about drawing parallels between President Donald Trump and a character from her film “9 to 5,” she declined to comment, stating, “I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer.” She emphasized her role as a performer and a role model, choosing not to criticize others.
Despite her famous neutrality, Parton revealed that she declined the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice. The reasons included her husband’s illness and travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She expressed concern that accepting the award might involve politics.
Parton’s political neutrality extended to her professional choices. When questioned about collaborating with conservative musician Kid Rock, she defended the decision, stressing that working with someone does not mean agreeing with all their views. She maintained that acceptance and love do not equate to endorsement.
Throughout her career, Parton balanced her personal beliefs with public expectations. She avoided endorsing candidates and expressed a humorous view of political campaigns. In a 2023 interview, discussing the possibility of running for president, she remarked on the challenges of the presidency with humor, saying, “I think we’ve had enough ‘boobs’ in the White House.”
Parton’s legacy extends beyond music. Her representatives confirmed her peaceful passing after a brief battle with cancer. At her request, a private service will be held for her family, with donations encouraged to her Imagination Library.
