Dory Funk Jr., a renowned figure in professional wrestling, has passed away at the age of 85. WWE confirmed his passing on Tuesday. Funk’s wrestling journey began in 1963 following his college football career at West Texas A&M University. Recognized for his influential contributions, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.
“Saddened to announce the passing of Dory Funk, Jr.,” stated WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque in a post. “His unique style inspired many performers in our industry. His work in WrestleMania 2, WCW, ECW, and several NWA-affiliated promotions laid the foundation for what would become a global spectacle.”
Funk’s passion for wrestling began in his father Dory Funk Sr.’s promotion, Western States Sports, in 1963. There, he gained valuable experience wrestling against competitors like Harley Race. In 1969, Funk won the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Worlds Heavyweight Championship and held the title for over four years, remaining active with NWA until 1987.
The National Wrestling Alliance expressed their condolences, highlighting Funk’s enduring impact on the sport. In a statement, they sent heartfelt wishes to his family, friends, and fans, acknowledging his lasting legacy.
Funk joined WWE (formerly WWF) in 1986, partnering with his brother Terry. Although his stint was brief, he faced opponents such as Junkyard Dog, Tito Santana, and Pedro Morales. His career included appearances in All Japan Pro Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling, culminating in his retirement in 2017.
He and his brother Terry were inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame in 2009, alongside notable figures like The Von Erichs, Bill Watts, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
Funk’s legacy continues through The Funking Conservatory, his wrestling school, where he trained stars like Kurt Angle, Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, and Mickie James. His contribution to wrestling will be remembered through the achievements of his students and his lasting imprint on the sport.
