Ed Sheeran returned to the stage in Philadelphia, expressing his emotions and apologizing to fans after recent controversy surrounding the removal of Macklemore from his tour. Opening his show at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran acknowledged the difficult choices he faced and the mistakes made. He emphasized his commitment to not disappointing his fans.
Addressing the situation in Israel and Palestine, Sheeran clarified that his concerts aim to promote unity rather than division. Though he traditionally avoids political commentary, he described the events in Israel and Gaza as deeply troubling. He remarked on the horrors at the Oct. 7 music festival in Israel and the catastrophic conditions in Gaza.
Sheeran’s emotional response included plans to contribute to victims affected by these events. Despite uncertainty about audience reactions, he received applause during his performance. Sheeran made adjustments to his usual show setup, removing the B stage out of concern for safety.
The decision to continue the tour rested on his belief that music unites people. Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field in response to Macklemore’s removal from the tour. Sheeran stated that the decision was made by concert promoters and venues, not him.
