Ejection and Social Media Controversy: DiJonai Carrington’s Dispute with Indiana Fever

DiJonai Carrington, a guard for the Chicago Sky, criticized the Indiana Fever on social media following her ejection from a close 90-86 game at the United Center. The incident occurred after she committed a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham late in the first quarter. Carrington chased Cunningham on a breakaway and, instead of the ball, struck Cunningham in the face with her forearm, causing her to fall.

Teammate Makayla Timpson held Cunningham back as the two players exchanged words. The referees initially called a flagrant foul on Carrington, which was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 upon review, resulting in her removal from the game. Despite Carrington scoring eight points in under four minutes, the Sky couldn’t recover from her absence. Cunningham, although involved in a brief post-play scuffle, received no additional penalty and successfully made the ensuing free throw.

The Sky led when Carrington was ejected but struggled afterward. Cunningham finished with just three points in her 28 minutes on the court. Following her ejection, Carrington took to social media from the locker room, calling out “white privilege” in all caps and tagging the Indiana Fever’s account. Later, she shared the date of the next matchup between the two teams, August 23, accompanied by a smiley face emoji. Post-game, Sky coach Tyler Marsh noted he wasn’t immediately aware of Carrington’s posts.

There have been recent headlines involving Cunningham’s outspoken comments on the inclusion of transgender athletes, yet the Sky didn’t view pre-game discussions as influenced by those remarks. Coach Marsh emphasized that the Sky is fighting for a playoff spot. He stated that Carrington, known for her passion, did not have malicious intent and the focus remains on player safety. The game retained intensity, with Fever guard Caitlin Clark and coach Stephanie White receiving technical fouls, though Clark’s was later rescinded.

Clark initially faced a one-game suspension due to her technical foul accumulation, but that was avoided post-review. Sky guard Natasha Cloud also got a technical foul while disputing a call from the bench. Despite overcoming multiple deficits and narrowing the gap to a single possession, the Sky couldn’t secure victory. The loss to the Fever marked their eighth consecutive defeat by the team.

With a crowd of 16,065 attending, the game was part of the WNBA’s “Rivals Week.” It was the fourth time the Sky played at the United Center this season in hopes of attracting larger audiences, though they remain winless in these matchups.
