Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, has publicly distanced himself from comments made by progressive commentator Hasan Piker. Piker suggested that certain pro-Israel rhetoric could potentially lead to backlash against American Jews. This controversy poses a challenge for El-Sayed’s campaign in a critical battleground state.
El-Sayed, among several Democratic candidates who collaborated with Piker to connect with younger voters, has participated in campaign events alongside Piker during the primary. However, recent comments from Piker have strained their political relationship.
Piker, during a livestream event, expressed his view that opposing Israel is not inherently antisemitic. He stated that American Jews do not universally support Israel, while some “Jewish institutions” perpetuate the notion of Jewish people being monolithic, which he considers harmful.
If American Jews continue to propagate the idea that their interests are solely tied to Israel, it may provoke action against American Jews themselves, not the state of Israel,” Piker remarked.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Piker’s comments, calling them dangerous and antisemitic. He stressed there is no justification for threats against Jewish communities, especially amid rising hate.
In response, El-Sayed emphasized the importance of advocating freely without fearing violence, especially for communities previously targeted. He condemned antisemitism in all its forms, stating that only he and his campaign spokespeople represent his campaign’s views.
El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, criticized El-Sayed’s response as insufficient, questioning his ability to represent Michigan effectively.
Piker’s controversial stance extends beyond this incident, including previous remarks favorable to groups opposing Israel. Some Democrats, like strategist Tré Easton, urged El-Sayed to clearly distance himself from Piker to protect his campaign.
