Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has emphasized the need to tackle longstanding issues affecting Black communities. He articulated these concerns during a meeting with women faith leaders in Detroit, hosted by the Woman Difference Collaborative. El-Sayed contends that the nation must acknowledge and address the ‘unpaid debts’ owed to Black communities, urging leaders to take responsibility in understanding and resolving them.
Facing Republican nominee and former Representative Mike Rogers, El-Sayed is engaged in one of the most scrutinized Senate races in the country. His remarks were captured in a video shared by C-SPAN. He highlighted the necessity for leaders who can comprehend these societal debts and take action.
El-Sayed responded to a query regarding his strategy to energize Democratic voters who didn’t support him in the primary. He emphasized the importance of consistent engagement with voters and showcasing his record. He challenged audiences to evaluate his history concerning issues he champions.
His policy focus includes addressing infant and maternal mortality, asthma, and lead exposure. He advocates for improving access to capital for small businesses, along with enhancing investment in housing and education.
Previously the health director for Wayne County, El-Sayed had made an unsuccessful bid for Michigan governor in 2018 before pursuing his Senate campaign.
The Detroit event also touched on El-Sayed’s public health initiatives, U.S. aid to Israel, support for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, campaign advertisements from Rogers, and criminal justice concerns.
For further information, Fox News Digital has attempted to reach El-Sayed’s campaign for comments.
