Eliud Kipchoge: A Running Legend

Eliud Kipchoge is renowned as one of the greatest distance runners in history. Initially gaining prominence in the 5000m event, he secured a world championship and Olympic bronze and silver medals. However, Kipchoge is most celebrated for his achievements in the marathon, including winning consecutive Olympic gold medals and making history as the first man to complete a marathon in under two hours. He also set world records on two separate occasions.

Behind these remarkable achievements lies a story of perseverance, nurtured in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Known for its high altitude and fertile soil, this region helped shape Kipchoge’s exceptional abilities. In an interview, part of the By Way of Africa series, Kipchoge discusses the pivotal Kenyan values that influenced his success, the motives behind his World Tour, and his hopes for Africa and the global community.

The World Tour was a beautiful thought. I woke up and made a decision with my team that instead of retiring, I would make a huge transition, visit the whole world, and [spread] the message of making this world a running world.

Embarking on the World Tour

Over the next two and a half years, Kipchoge plans to run marathons on every continent, including Antarctica, bringing others along in this journey. He encourages people to spread the word about the importance of running.

Reflecting on his 23-year athletic career, Kipchoge acknowledges the sport’s kindness and the platform it provided to achieve global success in city marathons, world records, and Olympic triumphs. His World Tour is his way of offering something back to the sport by making each continent a running hub.

Understanding Kipchoge’s Roots

Discussing Kenya, Kipchoge highlights its reputation in distance running, aided by environmental and cultural factors. Central to Kenyan identity are values such as discipline, consistency, and honesty, along with fostering young talent.

I always tell people that it’s hard to actually become a man, compete, and keep your head up in Kenya when you’ve been raised by a single mother, but everybody is fighting for space.

Raised solely by his mother, Kipchoge faced societal challenges that often did not respect single-parent households. Despite these obstacles, Kipchoge directed his energy and determination towards proving himself.

No Human is Limited

His philosophy, “No human is limited,” extends beyond his achievements. It roots back to his early experiences, where self-belief fortified his journey despite vulnerabilities. Kipchoge shares that sport offered him a voice to spread the message that boundaries are non-existent.

If Eliud, “the son of nobody”, can come out and break a world record and run under two hours, and he was taken care of by a single mother, then why not you?

Reflecting on his mother’s influence, Kipchoge attributes his discipline and resilience to her consistent and hardworking nature. Observing her struggles and triumphs deepened his commitment to these values.

Inspiration from the Community

Kipchoge acknowledges the continuous encouragement from the running community that motivates him. Receiving messages of support from fans worldwide and recognition from young children spurs his drive.

The running community has made me who I am today.

The Significance of Cape Town Marathon

Kipchoge’s World Tour commenced in Cape Town, marking his first marathon on African soil. This decision underscores Africa’s role in his life and its energetic youth. Cape Town’s addition to world marathon majors holds personal and continental significance.

It means everything to me, because it’s the gift to our African children, it’s the gift to African people, it’s the gift to our young African continent.

World Tour Destinations

His tour includes Brazil and Australia. Returning to Rio, where he claimed his first Olympic gold, symbolizes giving back to the city that facilitated his victory.

Purpose and Giving Back

Kipchoge’s current focus shifts from records to purpose. His ambition is to make the world a running world and address educational needs for vulnerable children globally through his foundation, which aims to establish libraries and contribute to environmental conservation.

Influence of Haile Gebrselassie

Growing up, Kipchoge was inspired by Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie. His influence motivated Kipchoge’s aspirations to be a leading figure in athletics.

Representing Africa

Kipchoge is proud to represent Africa globally. He views this as an opportunity to showcase Africa’s potential to compete in various sports and contribute positively to the world.

Vision for Africa’s Future

His vision for Africa includes technological advancement and energetic youth driving positive change. Kipchoge urges the next generation to embrace the belief that limitations are nonexistent.

If you could sit down with the 16-year-old Eliud, just beginning his journey, what would you tell him?

Kipchoge’s advice to his younger self revolves around maintaining discipline, consistency, honesty, and positivity.

By Way of Africa is dedicated to celebrating Africa’s stories and culture. This series underscores the diligence, discipline, and work ethic intrinsic to African heritage, resonating across society. African narratives contribute uniquely to the global culture.
