Emily Bojan Transitions from Softball to Basketball at DePaul

1 month ago 0

Emily Bojan joined the DePaul women’s basketball team this summer, having previously excelled in softball at Wisconsin. One of her first calls was to Mary Clare Brusek, a former basketball teammate from Marist. Brusek played four years of volleyball at Western Michigan before switching to basketball, where she participated in 19 games. She notably scored 14 points against Valparaiso last December.

Brusek was initially skeptical about Bojan’s news. “I didn’t believe her at first,” said Brusek of Bojan, who spent four years playing for the Badgers. When Bojan confirmed she was joining DePaul, Brusek thought she was joking.

Danielle Zymkowitz, an assistant softball coach at Wisconsin, suggested Bojan try another sport due to her competitive nature. “She didn’t think I was ready to quit,” Bojan explained, adding, “She mentioned basketball.” Initially, a basketball spot was available at Wisconsin, but Bojan opted for the transfer portal, attracting DePaul’s interest. She welcomed the idea of returning home to play in front of family and friends.

Sean and Megan Brusek, Brusek’s parents, both former DePaul athletes, had coached Bojan and Mary Clare during their basketball youth. “She’s one of my best friends,” Bojan said, reflecting on their shared history. While both had pursued non-basketball sports, they found humor in returning to basketball even for a short time.

Standing 5-foot-11, Bojan doesn’t aim to be a star or lead scorer for the Blue Demons. Her main goal is to keep pace since her last basketball experience in 2022. “The first days of practice were tough,” she admitted. “Getting back into basketball shape was challenging, having been a power hitter in softball.” Bojan’s softball stats include a .311 batting average across 161 games, with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs. She also had a 35-game on-base streak in her final spring season.

Mary Clare Brusek, now set for a sales role in Washington D.C., offered guidance. “I advised her to embrace the inexperience,” Brusek stated. “She’s new to this compared to others with four years of play. It’s rewarding to let others guide you.”

DePaul coach Jill Pizzotti values Bojan’s potential contribution. “Leadership and energy are crucial,” Pizzotti commented. “Emily’s college experience as an athlete gives her insight into challenges ahead. She’s spirited and a natural leader.”

Bojan received the nickname “Bo” while at Wisconsin from Zymkowitz. It’s not related to Bo Jackson or a play on her last name. “Emily is a girly name,” Bojan said. “I’m more of a tomboy, and my coach wanted to give me a fitting nickname.” This name continues into her basketball journey.
