Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care. She was injured in a shooting inside their Northern Virginia home. The news was shared by Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, during a press conference at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Andy Reid stated, “She’s doing great. She’s doing better and great from where she was, out of the ICU unit and making progress.” He emphasized the importance of Eric Bieniemy’s presence with her during her recovery.
Their son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, aged 27, has been arrested. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. This incident, described by authorities as a “domestic” disturbance, occurred on Sunday night in Ashburn, a Washington, D.C., suburb.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed any possible motive for the shooting.
A chaotic scene unfolded at the Bieniemy home during the law enforcement response. Video and audio showed deputies carrying the injured Mia Bieniemy away while officers, rifles drawn, approached the house where her son was apprehended.
Mia Bieniemy managed to call 911 despite her injuries. She was reportedly shot with a .22-caliber Ruger, sustaining wounds to her left forearm and left shoulder. The projectile also traveled across her chest, as described in the criminal complaint against Elijah Bieniemy.
Elijah is currently held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 31.
Eric Bieniemy holds a prominent position as an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. His role involves overseeing the team’s offensive strategies, which include notable players like quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. It remains unclear when he will return to his duties with the Chiefs. The team is preparing for their exhibition season starting August 15 and the regular season beginning September 14.
Andy Reid mentioned, “We stay in touch with him, keep him abreast of everything that’s going on.” Bieniemy is staying informed through practice session tapes during his personal time.
Attempts to contact representatives of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Defender for further comments on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
