Escalation in Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia Amid Renewed Conflict

3 weeks ago 0

A significant wave of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia early Tuesday left more than 70 people injured and caused fires at several oil facilities in the southern region of the kingdom, authorities reported. This marks a notable escalation in the ongoing conflict involving a vital U.S. ally and the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen.

Renewed Conflict Shatters Truce

Recent weeks have seen increasing clashes between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed government troops in Yemen, which ended a four-year ceasefire in the region’s civil war. The renewed fighting destabilizes an area already fragile from years of conflict and introduces additional uncertainty for the global economy.

The conflict poses a threat to shipping routes through the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a crucial path for oil transport and global trade. These tensions occur while the Iran war disrupts shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route previously handling a significant portion of the world’s oil.

Widespread Attacks Impact Saudi Facilities

Targets on Tuesday included “civilian and economic facilities” in the Saudi cities of Abha, Jazan, Najran, and Khamis Mushait, according to Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. The strikes resulted in 73 injuries, including women and children, although more details are pending.

Several oil facilities in Saudi Arabia’s south were set ablaze, temporarily halting operations. This region hosts key installations, including Jazan’s significant 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery. Firefighters were working to control the blazes as of Tuesday morning.

“These attacks represent a serious escalation and a direct threat to the kingdom’s security,” emphasized al-Malki, promising retaliatory measures against the Houthi militia.

Houthi Responsibility and Continued Attacks

The Houthis claimed responsibility for these actions, describing them as responses to Saudi strikes across Yemen. In a statement, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the rebels’ military representative, confirmed the use of ballistic missiles and drones in attacking southern Saudi oil facilities and infrastructure.

The rebels targeted strategic locations like the Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries and Aramco facilities in Najran and Abha. Saree accused Saudi Arabia of escalating the situation, asserting that future aggression would meet with strong retaliation.

Human Impact and Displacement

The escalation resulted in roughly 18,500 people fleeing their homes within Yemen, particularly from Taiz and Hodeida. The International Organization for Migration reported these already displaced communities are struggling without basic necessities such as food and shelter.

The civil war in Yemen, initiated when the Houthis took control of Sanaa and substantial northern areas in 2014, forced the government into exile. A subsequent Saudi-led intervention aimed to restore governmental power. The conflict has resulted in at least 150,000 deaths, creating a humanitarian crisis that has repeatedly threatened the region with famine.
