Recent Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon
Early Monday, the Israeli air force conducted airstrikes on a village in Southern Lebanon, specifically targeting Kfar Rumman. The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that at least 12 individuals died, including children, and others sustained injuries. This event marks a significant escalation between Israel and Hezbollah despite a truce agreement over two months ago.
The strikes occurred notably after the Israeli military claimed to have taken operational control of Ali Taher hill, a strategic location overlooking several villages and roads leading to Nabatiyeh. The Health Ministry reported one strike on a building killed 11 people, including two children and four women, with eight others wounded. Another strike targeted a vehicle, killing a paramedic from the Lebanese Islamic Risala Scout Association and injuring two additional individuals.
Community Impact
In Nabatiyeh, Mustafa Farhat, an 8-year-old injured in an airstrike that claimed his parents’ lives, was comforted by his grandmother at a local hospital. Residents expressed their distress and fear, with Fouad Chakaron commenting on the anxiety caused by continuous shelling and Saleh Medlej expressing his resolve to remain despite the destruction.
Increased Tensions
According to the Israeli military, the strikes responded to Hezbollah drone attacks targeting Israeli troops. The military indicated these strikes aimed at a Hezbollah militant transporting weapons through Kfar Rumman. In a separate incident, Israeli troops near the Beaufort castle were fired upon by a Hezbollah member, injuring two soldiers. The militants were subsequently killed.
Earlier, Israeli attacks resulted in seven deaths and the destruction of an empty hospital. These actions follow the release of five Lebanese prisoners by Israel as part of an agreement for Lebanon to search for bodies of Lebanese Jews missing since the civil war.
Unstable Truce Conditions
The truce mediated by the U.S. between Israel and Hezbollah has seen multiple violations. Despite the June framework deal, which involves Israeli troop withdrawal and Hezbollah disarmament, no tangible progress has occurred. Hezbollah insists on retaining its weapons north of the Litani River, while Israeli officials demand comprehensive disarmament.
Abdullah Farhat, Kfar Rumman’s mayor, condemned the attacks as a massacre and criticized the agreement between Lebanon and Israel, expressing frustration over the ongoing attacks since its signing.
