European Wildfires Force Massive Evacuations in Spain and France

Wildfires are raging across Spain and France, leading to the evacuation of more than 250,000 people. In France, a significant blaze threatens the Bordeaux wine region, prompting a national emergency declaration in Spain.

In France, the military has been deployed, and the Tour de France has been shortened as firefighters struggle against the vast fires. Over a quarter of a million people have been displaced from their homes in southwest France due to a wildfire moving towards Bordeaux. Officials warn the fire is so intense it is creating its own winds and behaving unpredictably.

French authorities requested another 55,000 evacuations overnight from areas south of Bordeaux, increasing the total number of evacuees to approximately 250,000. Gusty winds, dry conditions, and recurring heat waves have fueled the uncontrolled fire since midweek.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated firefighters faced a “difficult” night, emphasizing that “the situation remains very unfavorable.” He noted that the fire became highly aggressive and unpredictable. It created its own winds and advanced erratically towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area. However, by the end of the night, the blaze had calmed somewhat.

The fire has consumed around 42,000 hectares, equivalent to about 162 square miles — four times the size of Paris — in the Gironde region. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave mentioned the flames reached approximately 9 miles from the city, leading officials to partially close a major highway to and from the region.

Efforts to slow the fire’s progress involve over 2,500 firefighters, supported by 18 planes and helicopters. France has also deployed 1,500 soldiers to clear vegetation and create firebreaks. Several European countries have also sent aircraft and firefighting crews to assist.

Nunez highlighted the contribution of 450 volunteers: “We came to lend a hand because if it were our region, we’d want others to do the same,” said Pascal Roudier, a 65-year-old farmer. “Given the scale of the disaster, our efforts are very welcome too.”

Apart from the Bordeaux area, other major wildfires burn across France. A blaze in the neighboring Landes region has forced an additional 36,000 evacuations. Nearly 3,000 people have evacuated their homes in southern France’s Var region along the Mediterranean coast.

Spain is experiencing a similar emergency, with approximately 116,000 people evacuated as fires spread across the Valencia region and west of Madrid. The rapid fire in a Valencia suburb resulted in the death of one man, marking Spain’s first wildfire fatality in the recent wave of fires.

Earlier in July, 13 people lost their lives in southern Spain during the country’s deadliest wildfire in recent times.
