Europe’s Heat Wave Unveils Danube’s Drastic Impacts and Heightens Fire Dangers

As Europe faces an intense heat wave, the Danube River’s low water levels are causing significant disruptions. In Hungary, low levels nearly forced the shutdown of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. Prime Minister Péter Magyar reported that the water level was critically low during the night but slightly rose by morning, ensuring the plant’s safe operation.

Romanian authorities took action to redirect cooling water by conducting a controlled explosion in the river. Two nuclear reactors had already been shut down due to inadequate water levels. Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s nuclear plant continued operations despite similar conditions. However, a cruise ship in Bulgaria needed to evacuate nearly 200 tourists after running aground near Vidin.

The receding Danube also revealed World War II German warships in Serbia. These relics, previously hidden underwater, emerged as the river’s level fell. This underscores the severe drought affecting the region.

Wildfires have intensified due to weeks of high temperatures. Greece has been significantly impacted, with ongoing fires in Western Attica near Athens. Over 500 firefighters are combating the flames, which have proven difficult to control. In a tragic incident, two helicopters collided while attending to a blaze, resulting in the deaths of two crew members.

In France, some major wildfires are under control, though active fires remain in the southeast. In Gironde, near Bordeaux, the fire exposed potential unexploded World War II munitions, prompting bomb disposal teams to be dispatched.

The extreme temperatures have led to health warnings across Europe. In Italy, nearly all major cities received ‘red alert’ warnings from the Health Ministry, anticipating a nationwide alert by Thursday. The UK’s Health Security Agency issued heat health alerts for several regions, warning of increased risks to vulnerable groups.

Record temperatures have been reported across Europe, including an unprecedented high overnight temperature in the Czech Republic.
