Residents of Georgia’s 13th Congressional District have chosen Everton Blair to fulfill the remainder of Rep. David Scott’s term. Scott passed away in April, prompting a special election. The Associated Press has projected Blair’s victory over Scott’s daughter, Marcye Scott, in the runoff held on Tuesday.
Blair, formerly the chair of the Gwinnett County School Board, initially placed second to Scott among five candidates in the July 28 nonpartisan special election. The top two advanced to the runoff, where Blair emerged victorious.
Despite this win, Blair will only complete the remaining months of Scott’s term, which concludes in January. This is due to Blair finishing third in the May 19 Democratic primary for the full two-year term.
Voters in November will determine whether Democratic state Rep. Jasmine Clark or Republican Jonathan Chavez will serve the district beginning in January.
The 13th District traditionally leans strongly Democratic. In the 2024 election, Scott secured his seat with approximately 72% of the vote. Similarly, Kamala Harris, then Vice President, received about 71% of the vote in the district.
There are now 70 days until the 2026 midterm elections.
