In college football, teams with a legacy of success often remain at the top, while those without such history struggle. Despite last year’s victory by the Indiana Hoosiers, it’s uncommon for a team to claim its first national championship. However, there’s anticipation for another debut winner this season.
The Athletic conducted a survey of 18 coaches to determine their picks for this year’s champion. The consensus was on Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks as the likely victors. Six coaches chose Oregon, while no other team received more than three votes. One coach refrained from voting, confident in his own team’s potential to win, as reported by Bruce Feldman.
I think this is the most wide-open race we’ve had in college football in such a long time. I’ll say Oregon. Dan Lanning has continued to get better and better, and this is the year he cracks through,an offensive analyst in the ACC mentioned to Feldman.
Much of the optimism stems from quarterback Dante Moore, who received nine votes as the favored contender for the Heisman Trophy. No other candidate received more than four votes. A general manager from a Big 12 team commented, I’ll say Moore because he’s gonna have a lot of marquee games.
Should Moore meet or exceed expectations and become a strong Heisman contender, Oregon could be positioned to compete for their first national title. Although they are often part of the national championship conversation, obstacles have consistently arisen.
Last year, the team faced the Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff. The game began badly with Moore’s pass being intercepted and returned for a touchdown, leading to a sweeping 56-22 loss for Oregon. Insiders predict this season will conclude more favorably for the Ducks.
