In-N-Out Burger is renowned for its simple offerings of burgers, fries, and shakes. In 2005, the chain unveiled several popular off-menu selections online, calling it the “Not-So-Secret Menu.” Among these options, the Animal Style burger stands out. According to the company’s website, this burger includes hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, a mustard-cooked beef patty, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions.
In-N-Out emphasizes customer satisfaction, which led to the creation of the Animal Style burger. Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick explained to Fox News Digital that the burger originated when a customer requested a customized version after watching an associate prepare his own. The name “Animal Style” was spontaneously coined, and various other preparation styles have since been named by customers seeking specific orders.
In-N-Out also offers other off-menu selections. These include Double-Meat, with two beef patties; the 3×3 and 4×4, with three and four beef patties and slices of cheese respectively; Grilled Cheese, replacing a beef patty with two slices of American cheese; and Protein Style, wrapping the burger in hand-leafed lettuce instead of a bun.
Founders Harry and Esther Snyder established the first In-N-Out in Los Angeles in 1948. It was California’s initial drive-thru hamburger stand. By 1973, 13 restaurants were operative within Los Angeles County. Today, In-N-Out remains privately owned by the Snyder family and operates over 400 locations across 10 states.
Off-menu selections have been an open secret for years. The Los Angeles Times noted in 2004 that customers have long known the Animal Style order. The newspaper encouraged readers to explore this hidden menu, suggesting tries on Animal Style burgers and well-done fries.
Though popular, Animal Style continues to attract new fans. Social media discussions highlight the effect this option had on new customers, some declaring it a permanent preference.
Another secret menu item is the Flying Dutchman, featuring two patties and cheese slices without buns or condiments. This was created by former CEO Guy Snyder before his passing in 1999. The history of In-N-Out and its menu innovations reflect the company’s dedication to catering to specific customer tastes.
