Extended Pub Hours for England Fans During World Cup

1 hour ago 0

Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, announced extended pub opening hours, ensuring fans can enjoy World Cup matches without being rushed home. “Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together,” Starmer expressed.

The British Beer and Pub Association welcomed the decision, saying pubs “will be over the moon.” Meanwhile, the Night Time Industries Association highlighted the “significant boost” this move gives hospitality businesses. British newspapers report on the upcoming “England’s big all-nighter,” calling it “Mextra time” and a “Mexican rave.”

Despite the excitement, police chiefs voiced concerns over fans drinking for 12 hours straight. “We also know from previous tournaments, the knock-out games sadly see an increase in violent incidents, particularly in the night-time economy, and an increase in domestic abuse,” reported the National Police Chiefs’ Council. This is largely attributed to alcohol consumption.

Licensing laws generally require venues to stop serving alcohol by 11 p.m., but exceptions were made for the tournament, allowing pubs to operate until 2 a.m. Previously, England and Scotland matches had special provisions, but overnight matches like Sunday’s could stretch past 4 a.m. if it goes to penalties.

Starmer dismissed the idea of closing schools on Monday to let young fans sleep in. His spokesperson stated, “We want everyone to enjoy the game but children should be at school on Monday.” England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, suggested parents send an excuse for school and let them watch football.

As the tournament progresses, police professionalism and adaptability have been praised. Licensing changes were swiftly announced following England’s victory in the previous round.

Employers across England are facing last-minute leave requests, with concerns about workers calling in sick on Monday after festivities. “All of us need to go into work on Monday to celebrate England’s victory against Mexico,” stated government minister Baroness Smith.

Starmer plans to step down after two challenging years in office, to be succeeded by Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester mayor. Burnham’s casual image contrasts with Starmer’s formal public persona. Both are dedicated soccer fans, and Starmer supported England at the Euro 2024 final.

As July 19 marks the World Cup final, two days after Burnham’s expected leadership takeover, the responsibilities may shift if England reaches the final. England fans have improved their reputation over the years, aided by stronger policing and the gentrifying nature of soccer.

While English victories bring lively celebrations, scenes of disorder accompany outcomes like the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals, even though England lost.
