Newsweek reports that the damage occurred when a contractor vehicle drove into the fountain’s center after the removal of protective barriers. The impact caused multiple cracks, and repair efforts have commenced.

This garden, less known yet significantly positioned on the National Mall, was established in 1988 in recognition of 300 years of German immigration to the United States.
