F-35 Fighter Jet Crash Near Marine Corps Base in San Diego

An F-35 fighter jet crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego on Friday, leading to a small fire. The pilot safely ejected and was transported to a medical facility, but the cause of the crash remains unclear.

Aerial images showed the smoking aircraft in an open field within the base. Several vehicles and emergency responders were present at the scene, with the aircraft’s hatch visibly open. Footage from CBS affiliate KFMB-TV confirmed responders working to extinguish the fire using fire retardant.

The pilot’s identity has not been disclosed. The Marine Corps stated that the pilot is affiliated with Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The base, about 10 miles north of San Diego, serves as headquarters for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and is home to over 15,000 personnel.

This incident follows other notable accidents involving F-35 jets. In 2023, a Marine Corps pilot died ejecting from an F/A-18 Hornet near the same base. The pilot, Maj. Andrew Mettler, was found after a search led by the U.S. Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

F-35 jets, used by the Air Force, Navy, and Marines, have a price tag of approximately $100 million each. Other accidents in recent years have gained attention. In July 2025, a pilot safely ejected in Fresno County, California, causing a small grass fire. In January 2025, a training mission in Alaska led to an in-flight emergency, ending with the jet crashing and the pilot parachuting to safety.

In 2024, a Marine Corps pilot experienced malfunctions during heavy rain, ejecting from the craft. The plane flew for over 11 minutes alone before crashing on private property. The pilot was unharmed, landing safely and contacting 911. However, the investigation indicated the pilot acted inappropriately by ejecting.
