Family and Supporters Mourn Nolan Xavier Wells Amid Calls for Investigation

Family and supporters of Nolan Xavier Wells gathered in a Mississippi church on Monday to mourn and celebrate the 18-year-old. His death after a July 4 boat trip garnered national attention, leading to calls for an independent investigation.

The ceremony began with emotional remarks from Wells’ parents. They described their son as a warm presence, a gifted athlete, and a role model for his younger siblings.

He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued.

These were the words of his mother, Christine Wonsley. She added that Wells had a unique ability to boost others’ confidence and make them feel included.

The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a passionate eulogy, offering a $50,000 reward for any new information about Wells’ death. He emphasized the need for answers, noting there should not be conclusions of no foul play without a proper investigation. Sharpton referenced historical incidents of racial violence in Mississippi, including the cases of Emmett Till and Medgar Evers.

As applause filled the church, Sharpton insisted:

The reason why a lot of people in the nation are looking at this Nolan situation is that we’ve looked at history in Mississippi. Some of us remember what happened in Mississippi.

Ben Crump, the family’s attorney, led the crowd in chanting “Nolan’s life mattered.” Wells’ mother leaned on her husband, Elmore Wonsley, in grief. The case prompted discussions on racial tensions and mistrust of law enforcement in the Deep South. Notable attendees included director Spike Lee and former football player Terrell Owens. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter indicated Wells’ friends are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Initial interviews claimed Wells opted to stay on Horn Island and his friends thought he would find another way off. His body was discovered two days later off the island coast.

Speculation online has flourished, particularly concerning the reasons Wells was left behind. Crump pointed out a witness reported Wells intended to leave on the boat with his friends, conflicting with the sheriff’s account. He also mentioned that messages seemed deleted from his phone, found with his friends alongside his keys.

Crump is conducting his own investigation, working with the local prosecutor to examine the phone. The prosecutor agreed to present the completed investigation’s findings to a grand jury.

Crump emphasized the need for thorough questioning:

Our lived experiences tell us that we must question everything, everybody’s role, law enforcement’s role. That is the lived experience as Black people in America.

Wells, who would have turned 19 soon, was a wide receiver on the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He aimed to play at a Division I program. His coach, Les George, shared with WAPT-TV that Wells was exceptionally sociable and often visited to chat.

The Congressional Black Caucus, in a joint statement, also called for an independent and transparent investigation, citing unanswered questions. They expressed hope that the national support offers some comfort to the family.
