The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is seeking answers after the Mexican man was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston. The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. Tuesday during an ICE operation to take Salgado Araujo into custody. According to ICE, Salgado Araujo used his vehicle in a threatening manner against an officer, which led to the officer firing in self-defense.
Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo, described his father as a hardworking man who had lived in the U.S. for 35 years. Ronaldo stated that his father was en route to a work site when unmarked ICE vehicles surrounded him. The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in Salgado Araujo’s death. Three other men, including Salgado Araujo’s brother, were detained by federal officers.
“My father did not deserve this,” Ronaldo Salgado wrote on Facebook.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the FBI are investigating the shooting. Ronaldo recounted receiving distressing news from his mother and hearing his father’s pleas for help through a video of the incident. Salgado Araujo had been working on legalizing his immigration status and was close to obtaining a work permit.
Calls for Transparency
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is advocating for transparency and has initiated a petition for a comprehensive investigation into the shooting. LULAC representatives expressed distrust in the narrative provided by the Department of Homeland Security, linking it to previous incidents involving ICE.
“We do not believe them—they are playing by a playbook,” LULAC National CEO Juan Proaño said.
State and local officials emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation. Houston Mayor John Whitmire acknowledges that local authorities lack jurisdiction and urges for a transparent review process. Houston City Councilwoman Dr. Letitia Plummer and Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones echoed similar sentiments, drawing parallels with earlier shootings in Minnesota.
Demands for Justice
U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia joined the chorus of officials demanding accountability and clarity regarding the ICE operation. She noted the absence of a criminal record for Salgado Araujo and questioned the operation’s authorization and de-escalation efforts.
