Family Tragedy Unfolds in Montana as Man Kills Eight Relatives

1 month ago 0

A horrific incident unfolded outside Billings, Montana, when Alan Smith, 44, killed eight of his family members, including four children, during a Sunday gathering before taking his own life. Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims, reported that Smith had been asked to leave by his parents but returned to the home to commit the violence.

Smith’s deadly spree claimed the lives of his grandmother, parents, younger sister, and four children before he set the house ablaze. Attempting to escape, he was confronted by law enforcement. Police arrived at the scene to the sound of gunfire and the sight of the home engulfed in flames. By Tuesday, investigators confirmed the deaths of eight victims and that Smith died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Generational Impact

The victims represented four generations, from a seven-year-old child to a great-grandmother in her 90s, according to Jennifer Mercer, a neighbor and family friend. Ireland revealed that Smith, described as a “hermit,” spent most of his days in his room on his computer. Despite red flags and warnings from others, they went unheeded.

Smith, who attended Eastern Washington University, struggled to find steady employment. Although he lived with his parents for years, they asked him to move out recently. He returned unexpectedly on the evening of October 15, aligning the family’s tragedy with their regular Sunday dinner.

The Victims’ Background

Ireland’s ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their children Owen (13) and Chloe (7) died in the incident. Megan’s stepchildren, Landon Ghekiere (15) and Charlotte Ghekiere (12), also perished. The family, originally from Seattle, moved to Montana post-divorce. Adam Ghekiere, Megan’s current husband, was not present during the shooting as he was working. Adam’s parents, Dana and Barb Smith, moved near Megan after the marriage, and Dana’s elderly mother, Evelyn, resided in a nearby retirement home.

Adam, who works at the Billings airport, learned of the shooting via dispatch and arrived to find his family’s home in flames. He discovered his loss two hours later, expressing disbelief over the unanticipated presence of his children at the home.

Community Support Initiatives

Two GoFundMe pages have been created to support Adam Ghekiere and Erica Schneider. Jennifer Mercer, who set up one of the donation pages, shared poignant details about the children, Landon, and Charlotte, lauding them as caring and bright. The page aims to gather funds for memorials and support for the grieving family, already surpassing $60,000 in donations.

Michael Solberg’s page for Adam has raised over $90,000 so far. Solberg emphasized Adam’s dedication to helping others, advocating that he now needs collective support to manage funeral costs, time off work, counseling, and other unexpected expenses.

Through this tragedy, Charlotte emerged as a hero by calling 911 amidst the crisis. Adam recalls her answering his affectionate words with, “I love you more.”
