Fans Pay Tribute to Late Singer Bonnie Tyler in Wales

Hundreds of admirers gathered in a seaside village in Wales to honor the late singer Bonnie Tyler. On Saturday, the streets were filled with fans as her coffin was returned to her homeland.

The Grammy-nominated pop icon was widely loved for her 1983 hit power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” She passed away last month at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal. Tyler had been hospitalized in May in Faro, where she lived part-time, for emergency intestinal surgery.

Fans and local residents from the UK and beyond flocked to the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea. They watched as the hearse carrying her coffin, draped in a Welsh flag, made its way through the village. Many people gathered by her former residence, laying floral tributes in her memory.

She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales, said Carys Edwards, 18. Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler hailed from Skewen, Wales, approximately 7 miles from Swansea. The daughter of a coal miner, she grew up in public housing and shared a home with three sisters and two brothers.

Tyler received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing in 19th place. She became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022, recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to music, primarily due to her famous ballad. Total Eclipse of the Heart topped the charts in the US and the UK, amassing over 1 billion streams. Recent solar eclipses in 2017 and 2024 boosted its popularity further, including the one this week.

Other hits by Tyler include “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” featured in the film Footloose. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday for family and friends at a church in Swansea. Following the service, Tyler will be taken on a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
