He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.’ The statement praised his genius, noting, ‘His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.’

Mackie first made his mark by designing costumes for Mitzi Gaynor before securing a pivotal role on “The Carol Burnett Show,” where he worked throughout its 11 seasons. Among his most iconic designs was Cher’s feathered outfit at the 1986 Academy Awards, even sparking a shift in popular fashion trends. His influence made dramatic and revealing clothing more mainstream, as seen in his comment to People regarding Cher’s impact on fashion choices in the ’70s.

His illustrious career earned him multiple accolades, including nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for “The Cher Show,” and three Academy Award nominations. His creations are celebrated for their theatrical flair, featuring sequins, feathers, and vivid showmanship.
